Presidential Message

Dear APKASS Community,

I am very honoured to take over as the APKASS president this year. 2018 promises to be a very exciting and successful year for APKASS. I would like to thank outgoing President Myung Chul Lee of South Korea for his excellent service as APKASS president in 2017.

It is now 5 years since the inception of APKASS in its current form, and we have a come a long way during that time to become the premier knee surgery and orthopaedic society in the Asia Pacific region. APKASS membership throughout the region is increasing and will continue to grow through the efforts of our members in promoting the benefits of joining the society and becoming involved in the many educational opportunities membership provides. We continue to develop collaborations outside the Asia Pacific region also, with strong partnerships with organisations including ISAKOS, AOSSM, ESSKA, and SLARD. The travelling fellowship with AOSSM, ESSKA, and SLARD gives young leading surgeons from the APKASS community the opportunity to visit prestigious centres in other regions of the world, and further their education and establish friendships and professional collaborations that will last a lifetime.

I am very excited to be hosting the Biannual APKASS congress in my home town of Sydney this year. The Congress promises to be a wonderful event with world class scientific sessions and great opportunities for social events to meet new friends and foster existing relationships with old friends. We have over 100 invited speakers from around the world coming for the meeting, and have had 700 abstracts submitted, providing the ingredients for a world class meeting. The congress will be in the beautiful city centre, and will run from May 31st to June 2nd with 4 concurrent rooms of world class invited presentations, surgical demonstrations and original research. The congress is taking place during the world famous Vivid Lights and Arts Festival of Sydney which will be a spectacular backdrop for the meeting. I am particularly excited to showcase the excellent scientific orthopaedic research that is being done in the Asia Pacific region to my colleagues in Australia and New Zealand. I believe that the congress will produce a new level of excellence in orthopaedic congresses in Australia, the Asia Pacific region, and the world.

So, welcome to 2018 and a great year for APKASS as we continue to grow in size and stature as a society. Welcome to all existing members, and a very warm welcome to all new members. I sincerely hope that as many as possible can make it to the biannual congress this year, and I look forward to meeting and welcoming you to Sydney!
